Abstract
Objects: Recently, the prevalence of tinnitus has been increasing globally?including in South Korea?for reasons that remain unclear. In this study, we analyzed the onset of tinnitus according to socioeconomic status in middle-aged Koreans.

Methods: This study employed raw data from 12,041 subjects who were at least 40 years old from the 5th (2010?2012) Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We performed multiple logistic regression analysis to calculate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for tinnitus by socioeconomic status.

Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference in the onset of tinnitus according to socioeconomic status in the middle-aged population. The old age(p<.0001), depending on the occupations(p<.0001), the low level of education(p<.0001), the low income(p<.0001), not having a spouse(p<.0001), stress(p<.0001), depression(p<.0001) occurred tinnitus. Moreover, lower education(OR:1.784, 1.322-2.408) and low income(OR:1.591, 1.293-19.58). were found to result in higher odds of having tinnitus. Furthermore, women appeared to be more influenced by educational or economic levels compared to men.

Conclusions: We investigated the influence of socio-economic status on the onset of tinnitus, by analyzing the onset of tinnitus in relation to the socio-economic status of middle-aged individuals who were at least 40 years old.
